Mardi Gras Celebrations and Tuesday Night Jazz Cancelled Tonight

Warning: The following may be triggering. Please know that support is available.

The Tseshaht First Nation is preparing to publicly release today the Phase 1 findings from research and ground penetrating scanning at the site of the former Alberni Indian Residential School (AIRS). The Tseshaht First Nation media release can be found here.

United Church faith communities in BC and across the country are being asked by the Indigenous Ministries Council Executive of the Pacific Mountain Region and the UCC Indigenous Ministries and Justice Unit to hold space and silence for a period of 24 hours.

In response to this request, we have made the decision to cancel our plans for the Mardi Gras celebrations and Tuesday Night Jazz at the Church tonight.

The PMRC Indigenous Ministries Council Executive advises that the only voices that need to be heard at this time are the survivors and the communities impacted. Our role is to bear witness, with respect to listen, watch, and learn, lifting up the survivors and the Port Alberni community as everyone processes these findings.
