Kelby MacNayr's Blue Note Repertory All-Stars celebrate the music of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet!

In the 1950's and 60's the Cannonball Adderley Quintet crisscrossed the United States in two Cadillacs bringing joy, sass and swing to small clubs and concert halls, celebrating and sharing a music equally rooted in the blues, gospel music and in hard swinging bebop.

Featuring:

Roy Styffe - sax
Miguelito Valdes - trumpet
Tony Genge - piano
Peter Dowse - bass
Kelby MacNayr - drums

The experience of being at a Blue Note Repertory All-Stars performance is one of being transported into an era. An era some only remember from our record collections. Most of us weren’t where the musicians were performing, or old enough to go to the clubs. So the mystique of the music comes in black and white photos of smoky jazz lounges, scratchy LPs and far off radio stations.

Let yourself get transported back to the late 50’s and early 60’s this Tuesday as Kelby’s Blue Note Repertory All-Stars celebrate the music of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet!

The Sermon

In anticipation of Black History Month we invite you to revisit this mid-pandemic performance we produced way back in March of 2021.

Please enjoy this very special concert featuring the music of The Sermon played by pianist Dr. Tony Genge, bassist Scott White and drummer Kelby MacNayr with interludes or Sermonettes in the tradition of this music - by our very own Reverend Karen Dickey.

Hampton Hawes' "The Sermon", recorded in 1958 was not released until 1987, 10 years after his death.  The album, recorded with two of his long-time L.A. musical collaborators - bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Stan Levey, stands as a totally unique and exquisite master-piece of jazz.
