A Newsletter with a Heartbeat

James Bay United Church
JBUC Newsletter for October 17, 2025

An Editor’s Note

Hi, I’m Natalia, JBUC’s interim Communications Coordinator – and the one who’s been putting together our newsletters for the past 4.5 months.

Tonight, we have a really, really lovely surprise waiting for you – plus a short personal note from me. So be sure to read this newsletter all the way to the end… and who knows, you might just spot something special along the way!

Sunday Worship

Sunday Worship

October 19, 10:15–11:30 am

This Sunday we return to the Lectionary to read Luke’s version of a parable where Jesus compares God to a judge who ultimately grants justice. We assert that, by the grace of God, the world is more just – on average – now than at any point in history. In this case, we consider local food security initiatives to demonstrate the increasing justice in the world. (And we recognize the notable exceptions for still too many people.)

Dinner + Movie Night: Mildred Pierce

Dinner + Movie Night: Mildred Pierce

October 18, 6:20 pm

We’ve unveiled the mystery!

This month’s feature will be Mildred Pierce — the gripping psychological drama that won Joan Crawford her Academy Award for Best Actress in 1945. (The byline on the DVD cover says it all: “The kind of woman all men want… but no man should have.”)

Come around to the back door, off the parking lot, and bring something delicious to share – think deli-style meats, cheeses, and salads.

Join us for a cozy evening of good food, great company, and classic Hollywood tension.

Doors open at 5:50 pm, and dinner starts at 6:20 pm.

Aaaaaaaand (drum roll, please)... Guess Who’s Back!

Aaaaaaaand (drum roll, please)... Guess Who’s Back!

Our wonderful Zunaira, JBUC’s Communications Coordinator, is back after her (very!) short leave – and she’s not alone, she’s brought reinforcements!

Just look at this radiant duo in their matching red shirts – it’s easy to see that our upcoming newsletters will carry an extra sparkle, full of a momma’s warmth and a little one’s joy.

As for me, I’m happily passing the torch (and the household!) back to Zunaira. I’ll still be around as a volunteer and occasional fill-in – and you’ll see me up on stage introducing the amazing performers at Tuesday Night Jazz through December!

Wishing all the best to Zunaira and her beautiful family – and see you at church!

With love,
Natalia Zhuravlova
