Tuesday Night Jazz at the Church Presents
Remembering Sonny Rollins

Remembering Sonny Rollins

1930–2026

It is with respect and gratitude that we acknowledge the passing of one of the greatest jazz artists of recent times.

Saxophonist and composer Sonny Rollins was a unique, thoughtful, joyous, and powerful artist, relentlessly in pursuit of personal authenticity and humanity through the jazz art form. He collaborated with many of the greatest artists of his day, including Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Clifford Brown, Elvin Jones, and many others.

Sonny Rollins possessed a truly individual voice on the saxophone and was an influential performer, bandleader, composer, and advocate for respect and dignity.

We celebrate Sonny’s contribution to the jazz tradition, to music around the world, and to the gifts and example he leaves behind for future generations.

Sunday Jazz Matinee at James Bay United Church presents Brad Shigeta Plays and Sings!

Vancouver-based trombonist Brad Shigeta pays a very special visit to the Sunday Jazz Matinee.

Originally from Winnipeg, Brad Shigeta moved to New York City at the invitation of internationally acclaimed bassist Dave Holland. For the next 20 years, Brad worked with the legacy orchestras of the legendary Count Basie and Duke Ellington, as well as the Lionel Hampton Big Band, the Dave Holland Big Band, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, saxophonist Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, and countless others.

Returning to Canada, Brad eventually relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia, and split his time between the Seattle and Vancouver jazz communities. He can be heard performing with many of the West Coast’s finest groups.

For this special concert, Brad brings Vancouver bassist Noah Hocker and Victoria drummer Matt Pease together to celebrate the release of his recent trio recording, Brad Shigeta Plays and Sings.
