Sunday Worship Service: "Summer Light" Series, Sunday 4August 2, 10:30–11:30 am “Let go of everything that is not love”, says Rumi. This week, as we wrap up our Summer Light series drawing upon the book by John Philip Newell, “The Great Search: Turning to Earth & Soul in the Quest for Healing & Home”, we find ourselves accompanied by the 13th century Sufi poet, Jalaluddin Rumi. Rumi’s “quest for healing and home” led him straight into his heart of hearts where he discovers the intermingling of the human and divine. Join us this Sunday as we seek together that Divine Love that is the deepest source of new life. Please note that our Sunday Service begins at 10:30. You are warmly invited to gather with us from 10:15 am, in our Sanctuary or online, for a time of musical reflection. Pablo Cardenas Plays the Cuban Piano ClassicsAugust 4, 7:00–8:30 pm While many community events take a summer break this time of year, there's one thing you can always count on: Tuesday Night Jazz at the Church. If you're new to our church, here's a fun fact: long before we launched our Sunday Jazz Matinée series, Tuesday nights had already become a tradition. And if you ask founder and drummer Kelby MacNayr, it'll continue "every Tuesday, rain or shine, till the end of time." This Tuesday, join us for Pablo Cardenas Plays the Cuban Piano Classics — an evening of spectacular music inspired by Cuba's rich and vibrant musical heritage. Born in Matanzas, Cuba, Cardenas studied classical piano from a young age through university, developing a deep appreciation for classical music from around the world as well as Cuba's extraordinary tradition of blending classical, folk, and other musical influences from across the Americas and beyond. A virtuoso pianist, Cardenas has been performing for more than a decade with longtime musical collaborators bassist Peter Dowse and drummer Kelby MacNayr. Left-handed electric bassist Peter Dowse was born in England and has toured the world, performing in virtually every musical style imaginable. Poem of the Weekby Rumi Like the ground turning green in a spring wind. Like birdsong beginning inside the egg. Like this universe coming into existence, the lover wakes, and whirls in a dancing joy, then kneels down in praise. from "Birdsong from Inside the Egg", Rumi, 13th century
