Sunday WorshipSunday, April 21, 10:15am This week … we find ourselves landing into the eve of Earth Day. And so we will draw that into our consciousness as we move further into this season of Easter. Our Reflection today invites us to journey with Lyanda Lynn Haupt — a naturalist and ecophilosopher rooted in her awareness of “nature’s irrepressible interconnection”. She takes us from her childhood experience of “Frog Church” to pondering how we can respond to the twin realities of climate crisis and habitat destruction. She suggests we begin by settling ourselves into “a spiral of inward, receptive stillness” that will lead to outward creative action. Honouring Vanya!
After being at the helm of our JBUC Office for 11 years, Vanya Smith, will be taking some time to enjoy nature and then looking for a new career venture. It’s time to honour her for all she has brought to the life of JBUC over the years. From attending to the numerous tasks associated with running the office, to liaising with the minister, other staff and volunteers; from preparing our Sunday bulletins to creating our beautifully illustrated PowerPoint slides for our streamed services; from crafting eye-catching pamphlets to putting her artistic skills to work for our “Window Wanderland” creations, from putting together our Annual Reports to … well you get the idea! By way of showing our gratitude, we will be celebrating Vanya during our coffee time after the service on April 21st. If you would like to make a money contribution to go toward a farewell gift, you can pop that into the fancy box on the Greeters table. Please make your donation today. Since we don’t want these contributions going through Vanya, |

Earth Day 2024“Planet vs. Plastics” This is about fighting the big problem of plastic all over the world. Earth Day organization wants to bring people from different places together. The goal is to make much less plastic, 60% less by 2040. We want a future without so much plastic. This is not just about having less trash, but it is also about keeping us and the environment healthy. Kathleen Rogers, who represents earthday.org, tells us that plastic is everywhere, even inside us. This is bad for our health. Small pieces of plastic, called microplastics, are getting into our food, water, and air. They can be harmful. In the last 10 years, we have made more and more plastic and this is dangerous for both the environment and our health. Denis Hayes, another activist, says the petrochemical industry is a big part of the problem. This industry makes a lot of plastic. Often, they put their factories in poor areas. This hurts the people and the environment there. Surprisingly, most items, like plastic bags and drinking bottles, are not recycled. Also, making plastic bottles uses a lot of water.
