Note from Karen
For a few weeks now, we’ve been anticipating the opportunity for an important decision-making conversation THIS Sunday.
The Board is recommending that we create a new part-time staff position focussed on helping us further our priority of deepening our relationship with people of the James Bay neighbourhood. As a congregation, we’ve tested the idea through our 2 year pilot-project, and experienced the possibilities and benefits of dedicating staff time to supporting this ministry. It seems, from our responses gathered up a few weeks ago, it is also the thrust of the Holy Spirit among us to propel us further in this direction.
Our denomination has a way of pressing us to ‘look before we leap,’ which turns out to be wise counsel! The documents that the Board has prepared (available to you through the link provided) are an expression of that exercise of looking. They detail a) the emerging purpose and direction of the congregation that point to the wisdom of creating the staff position; b) the position description; and c) our financial status.
I encourage you to read the documents ahead of the conversation that we will have on Sunday as part of our service, enabling you to show up as an informed participant as we make a decision together.
Thank you for your part in caring about our work and witness in James Bay. For more infomation visit: https://www.jamesbayunited.com/pages/communication-neighbourhood-engagement-ministry-position

DINNER with MOVIEPotluck Social - Saturday, June 29, 2019 See you tonight, June 29th in the church's lower hall. Our movie choices over this summer are taken from the 'remarkable true-stories' catalogue: in this case 'Frozen Time: the story of Dawson City'. Truly remarkable narrative portrayal, produced in 2016, using masses of photos & film found frozen in perma-frost under the city-hall. About our Worship in Irving ParkA musical note from Gordon I often receive direction and wisdom from my parents and grandparents. Every year they took us to Vincent Massey Park in Ottawa to celebrate and worship as a congregation of Westboro United Church in a public way at this very gazebo. As a youth musician in the church, I remember working with Rev. Gordon Cann, to plan a service that included Morning Has Broken by Cat Stevens. I played guitar and thought we were very hip and groovy. At 16, I was moving all the sound equipment and instruments to the park miles from my home - with the help of my grandmothers '63 Belair - and setting up in the early hours (for a teenager) to be ready for the congregation when they arrived. At the time I didn't give any thought to what an inconvenience and how disquieting it might have been for some of the congregation to worship outside in a different location. No alternative service was offered in our regular sanctuary and while we helped people with rides to drive across the city, I am sure there was grumbling, but I didn't hear it. For the most part we showed up. And really, that is all Christ asks us to do. Gordon Miller This Hymn also comes to mind ... #522 from Voices United 1 The Church is wherever God's people are praising, 2 The Church is wherever God's people are loving, 3 The Church is wherever God's people are seeking For more infomation visit: http://jamesbayunited.com/events/james-bay-picnic/2019-07-21
