Sunday Worship ServiceOctober 18, 10:30–11:30 am, JBUC Staff and Ministry & Program Leads meeting at 11:45 am With Creation Time having concluded, we return to the Lectionary just in time to read about a Pharisee and a Herodian attempting to "gotcha" Jesus. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar? they ask. Ever the clever one, and never to be outwitted, Jesus' answer surprises them. Yes, we resist the forces of empire: division, greed, subjugation, and destruction. But yes, we have to do it wisely. And even behind this witty exchange about non-violent resistance, we see a profound theological statement: it's all God's anyway. Please note that our Sunday Service begins at 10:30. You are warmly invited to gather with us from 10:15 am, in our Sanctuary or online, for a time of musical reflection. A friendly reminder to all JBUC Staff and Ministry and Program Leads: right after the service, we'll gather in the sanctuary for the first of three fall conversations with the Board about our governance model and revised organizational structure. The gathering will take approximately 45 minutes. For more infomation visit: http://jamesbayunited.com/events/sunday-worship-service--12/2026-10-18

Public Global Talks Series: "Critical Perspectives in Religious Studies"October 25, 2:00 pm, UVic Multifaith Centre Over recent decades, the Religious Studies discipline has critiqued the modern concept of religion, including the notion that there is a distinct grouping of 'world religions'. This critique questions the artificial separation of 'religion' from 'secularity'. It also suggests that Protestant Christianity's emphasis on personal, scriptually-based belief has significantly shaped how legitimate religions are defined and understood. Dr. Andrew Wender will open a conversation on how these perspectives may shed light on key aspects of the Baha'i Faith, such as progressive revelation. Please join us with your family and friends for discussion, participation and refreshments. |
