Great American Songbook TrioSunday Jazz Matinee Presents the Great American Songbook Trio — with a very special introductory swing dance lesson! Featuring the legendary pianist and vocalist Ms. Louise Rose, bassist Joey Smith, and drummer/vocalist Kelby MacNayr, the Great American Songbook Trio is a tour de force of jazz. Some time ago Louise requested that we hold a special spot for anyone wishing to learn a few tips on the very basics of the joyous art of social dancing. Over the past few months, we have been graced by the presence of our friends Alison and Andrew, two of the city’s beloved swing dancers and teachers. Although they are both unavailable to teach this week, we’ve invited a couple of other friends, Cave and Catie from the Swing Dance Association of Victoria, to give us a few pointers. Avram McCagherty and FriendsAvram Devon McCagherty is one of Victoria’s most well-loved musicians. Fluent in a dizzying array of musical styles — from his early days in folk music, Irish musical traditions, and Gypsy Jazz under the tutelage of legendary guitarist Marc Atkinson, to Traditional Jazz under the guidance of friend and mentor, legendary banjo player and early jazz historian Borgy Borgeson — Avram has forged a musical identity all his own. A leader of numerous musical ventures, including the beloved Capital City Syncopators, the Stomp Club, and the Avram McCagherty Trio, Avram is also an indispensable member of groups such as the Yiddish Columbia State Orchestra, CANUS, and more. In this special presentation, Avram brings together longtime musical friends and Victoria music legends, violinist Richard Moody and bassist Glen Manders. Admission by donation (suggested donation: $20). Everyone is welcome, regardless of ability to pay. |
