Wednesday, December 31

Welcome the New Year with good food, great company, and a classic film experience.

On Wednesday, December 31, all are invited to a special Dinner + Movie evening at James Bay United Church. This is a relaxed, joyful way to close out the year together and step into the New Year with hope and connection.

Potluck Dinner

Doors open: 5:00 pm
Dinner served: 5:15 pm
Movie Screening: 6:30 pm

Bring a favourite dish to share and enjoy a potluck meal together. This shared table is a chance to connect, laugh, and celebrate the season of renewal.

Movie Screening

Following dinner, we’ll screen the little-known but fascinating film STAR! (1965), starring a very young Julie Andrews. Nominated for multiple Academy Awards, the film tells the biographical story of legendary stage star Gertrude Lawrence, who originated the role of Anna in The King & I opposite Yul Brynner later in her career.

The film also features eminent Canadian actor Daniel Massey as Noël Coward and was written and directed by Robert Wise, who hoped to further establish Julie Andrews’ superstar status following her early successes. Though it struggled at the box office, STAR! remains a rich, entertaining, and rarely screened gem.

A Night of Hope and Joy

This potluck and movie night is about more than a film—it’s about gathering in community, sharing food, stories, and laughter, and welcoming the New Year together with hope and joy.

All are welcome. Bring a dish, bring a friend, and settle in for a very special New Year’s Eve.
