Please consider coming!

The Movie – 'ZORBA THE GREEK' is a magnificent old classic from the middle-Sixties, starring Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates, and Lila Kedrova. It's a remarkable movie because it won the Best Picture award in at least 6 festivals, including the Academy Award [Also 8 nominations, including all the acting categories], the SAG awards [Screen Actors Guild], the British Academy award, and the Turkish award in 1971 when Turkey started its own award series. All 3 leads won acting awards either in the Academy Awards, the BAFTA [British], or SAG [Screen Actors Guild].

The story follows a pedantic Englishman who has inherited an old tin mine on a small Greek island that has been closed for years. He hires a raffish older Greek man on the ferry across the Aegean, who seems to know a lot about everything, and who assures the Englishman he can get the mine running again. Because the very naive and dapper Englishman holds considerable interest to the women in the Greek village as well as the men [jobs], what follows throughout a comedy of errors is the dialogue from Zorba about how men & women get along, and how men must treat women. Lila is an aging French prostitute who came to the island 40 years before, following the navy commanders of 3 countries who are engaged in a war. Because she is the only person in the village with a rather large house, she ends up being the landlady of the two men. This is not a simple arrangement.

There will be a 45-minute discussion at the end.

I look forward to seeing you-all ... and please bring a friend!
Gary.
