Accessible music venues that you can walk to right in the neighbourhood encourage good mental and spiritual health. With the help of local jazz legend Kelby MacNayr, James Bay United Church is bringing some of the best of the best in the Victoria jazz scene to the heart of James Bay ~ A venue without distractions ~ where the focus is you, the music and the sacred space to listen.

Join this special neighbourhood weekly gathering offered by James Bay United Church and the Victoria Jazz Community.

  • A suggested donation of $10 (as you are able) will be taken at the door.

October 1 - Brad Shigeta Quartet. Trombonist Brad Shigeta spent 20 years working as a top-trombonist in New York City playing with the legacy bands of the legendary Count Basie, Duke Ellington and in the working Sextet of Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis to name a few! Shigeta also recorded and performed with the renowned Dave Holland Big Band as well and many other top performing groups around NYC. Newly relocated to Vancouver, Shigeta brings with him the joyful exuberance of the swing era along with a wild sense of musical adventure.

October 8 - New York City's Misha Piatigorsky with Peter Dowse and Kelby MacNayr. A powerhouse piano player, composer, band-leader Misha Piatigorsky is the special guest artist featured with the stellar team of bassist Peter Dowse and drummer Kelby MacNayr. The award-winning Piatigorsky incorporates genre-blurring pyrotechnics to his innovative arrangements of jazz and rock classics, as well as his own compositions inspired by the sounds and grooves of Brazil, hip hop, music from the Middle East and MORE!

October 15 - Roy Styffe quartet plays the music of Thelonious Monk! The renowned saxophonist Roy Styffe brings together an all-star group to celebrate the sound and spirit of jazz innovator and pioneer Thelonious Monk. Monk's enigmatic, brilliant compositions are at once playful and profound. Monk was at the very forefront of the Be Bop Revolution in jazz and his music is modern, hip and timeless to this day.

October 22 - Miguelito Valdes All-Star Cuban Quintet! A world-class trumpeter in the tradition of the Cuban greats, Miguelito Valdes grew up in the musical hot-bed of his native Havana. Experiencing the rhythms of folkloric Cuban and Afro-Cuban music as well as the sounds of traditional Son and Jazz, Miguelito joined the bands at the Tropicana Club and touring with the world-famous Buena Vista Social Club and the Afro-Cuban All-Stars! Don't miss this special presentation featuring an all-star quintet of some of the finest Cuban musicians including Jose Sanches, Hector Ramos, Cynthia Rodrigues & Peter Dowse.

October 29 Hoofin' it! Dance has been an integral part of jazz from the very beginning and none so connected as the jazz art form of Hoofing - the particular style of tap dance which engages the rhythmic vocabulary and improvisational quality of jazz into the foundation of the art form. For this special tap dance celebration we invite NYC tap dancer and Vancouver's new Artistic Director of the Vancouver Tap Society special guest Andrew Nemr w pianist Daniel Reynolds and Kelby MacNayr!
