At the James Bay United Church Community Lunch, we have a table with food from the Mustard Seed FoodShare warehouse for guests to take home. Volunteer drivers pick up the food and bring it to the lunch every Thursday.
We have a pickup appointment at 11:15 am. Drivers pick up boxes of food from the warehouse loading dock, load it in their vehicles and drive it to the church. At the church we have a cart to bring the food down the ramp to the basement where the lunch takes place. Other volunteers at the lunch will help to unload the vehicle.
A few things you should know:
- Some of the boxes can be fairly heavy, so you’ll need to be able to load them in your car at the warehouse but, as noted, there will be help to unload when you arrive at the church.
- We usually get enough food to fill a compact car. If you have a larger vehicle, they sometimes offer us extra food.
- We get a wide variety of food, including produce, meat, bread, dairy items and packaged food.
- The food is mostly in good shape but there may be some seepage once in a while. It’s best to cover your car seats.
- The FoodShare warehouse is located in Esquimalt, on Viewfield Road.
- We make a pickup schedule every three months. We rotate shifts among five or so drivers.
- You’re welcome to stay for lunch after your delivery. We’re prepping the table and the room until 12:30 when we start to let guests in.
