The Board meets using Zoom technology. The Financial Reports show offerings up from last year at this time for which we are grateful. Our first payment of the Federal Government wage subsidy has arrived. If all goes as planned with no sudden expenses we will make it through much of this year. However there will be a financial crisis in January when the insurance policy comes due.

Most of the meeting was spent sorting out what needs to happen prior to any possibilities of re-opening. Board members have each taken an area for work, including such things as measuring out the church to see how many people could be in the building at once while maintaining physical distancing, and clarifying what groups were using the church (renters, congregational activities) and what would be required of those groups to use the church in the future. All of the working groups will stick to the following core principles as a plan is created:

  • The safety of the community (staff, Congregation, renters, user groups, volunteers, etc.) is our utmost priority and duty.
  • We will follow the direction of the Provincial Health Officer and the Pacific Mountain Regional Council and the national United Church of Canada.
  • We must consider the demographic of our congregation (high risk given age).
  • Physical distancing will remain indefinitely.
  • We will continue to provide virtual services and look for opportunities to enrich them until we can resume in-person gatherings, continuing and expanding as time even after we resume meetings in person.
  • We will assess the impact on staff capacity (individual responsibilities and cumulative increases).
  • We will identify the financial costs and, potentially, revenue.

While we recognize that the church building and Thrift Shop will not be used in the near future, the Board wants to have clear plans in place as we move forward. Watch for more information in coming months.
