Good afternoon James Bay United Church,

Just a few but important notes amidst these hours of last minute things before Christmas.

The doors of our sanctuary will be open and candles will be lit by 9:30 tomorrow night, should you wish to come into a quiet space before the service on Christmas Eve.  Our service begins at 10pm.  There’s always something beautiful about a late night gathering in that beautiful space, as we come to celebrate the mystery of God coming close.  In the candle-light you may not notice that the organ has been moved from the front of the sanctuary to make an accessible place for all those who have joined the choir this season.  A few weeks ago Duncan issued the challenge to us ... how can we make our sanctuary more accessible, making a place for every body who seeks a place to participate in the life of our congregation?  Taking this step to more comfortably accommodate those who wish to sing in the choir is a first response to that important challenge.
And speaking of the choir, a beautiful anthem is in store for us on Christmas Eve.
I’m still looking for one more scripture reader that evening.  If this is something that calls to you (I clearly haven’t been calling the right people so far!), would you be in touch and I’ll gladly provide you with your part of the Christmas story.  kdickey@shaw.ca  or 250 592 5931

On Christmas morning, our service will begin with our gathering as usual at 10:15.  More carols!  A further celebration of the gift of God’s radiant love.

On a more sobering note, Johan is in hospital, having suffered a stroke.  He was admitted on Monday with signs of a minor stroke; and yesterday he experienced a total loss of movement of his left arm and leg. This is a very difficult time as you might imagine, as he recognizes the likelihood of a very significant change in his life.  At the same time, realizing love makes all the difference at a time like this, he is eager to stay connected with us and his wide circle of friends.  He has a phone in his room and is glad for me to pass along his number if you wish to be in touch 250 727 7871 – local 6213.  If you are thinking about going to see him, calling ahead is important, to ensure he is up for a visit.  He is at Victoria General Hospital.  Check on your arrival for his room number as that may change over the next few days.

Finally, we have received this invitation from Rabbi Harry ...

Chaverim (Friends) in Faith,
I want to offer you and your congregants an invitation to join my synagogue community at our Chanukah Menorah lighting this coming Monday December 26 (Boxing Day) starting at five pm in Centennial Square.  One of the core themes of Chanukah is religious freedom and this year we are celebrating the "Light of Freedom."  It feels very relevant this year that we affirm and dedicate our selves to protecting and nurturing the amazing freedom we share here in Canada.

If you are out shopping on Boxing Day and need a lift that includes donuts, klezmer music and lots of song and dance come join us.Admission is free some folks are bringing items for the St. John the Divine food bank.

I hope everyone is ready for a meaningful and joyous holiday season.
Kol Tuv- all the best
Rabbi Harry

wishing you a Grace-filled Christmas,
Karen
