Together in thanks and joy

James Bay United Church
JBUC Newsletter for October 10, 2025
Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

May this season remind us that God unites with us through food, gratitude, and shared love around every table.

Sunday Worship – Thanksgiving

Sunday Worship – Thanksgiving

October 12, 10:15 pm

This Sunday, being Thanksgiving, we reflect on the prominence of food in the Judeo-Christian tradition. As we conclude five weeks exploring Christian mysticism, we’ll consider how food can serve as a mystical bridge with God.

Our Sunday Worship Choir will also offer special Thanksgiving music to lift our hearts in gratitude and praise.

Royal Victoria Marathon: Road Closures

Royal Victoria Marathon: Road Closures

October 11 & 12

Roads in Victoria and Oak Bay will be impacted on Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12 as part of the Royal Victoria Marathon. Also, no parking will be allowed on the race routes.

Please note that James Bay, including the area around our church, will be heavily affected by road closures. We encourage everyone to plan ahead and check the Royal Victoria Marathon website for details and the best routes to reach the church.

Jennifer Asks: Question 2

Jennifer Asks: Question 2

A congregation member has commissioned a JBUC hymn to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the United Church. We are going to take a collaborative approach and draw out words and ideas from the congregation and later workshop ideas with the choir and other parties.

As a first step, over the next several weeks, you will be invited to answer a question each week. Please feel free to interpret the question however you like and to say as much or as little as you would like.

Second question: What do you love the most about being a part of the JBUC community?

Dinner + Movie Night

Dinner + Movie Night

October 18, 6:20 pm, doors open at 5:45 pm

We’re keeping this one a mystery — quite literally!

Our next Dinner + Movie Night will feature either a gripping musical journey through the dazzling yet turbulent life of a legend – Judy Garland – or a classic old-fashioned murder mystery where every glance and shadow hides a secret.

You’ll have to come and see which one the projector reveals!

Bring your favorite dish to share, and settle in for an evening of good food, good company, and suspenseful delight.

Unveil the Mystery (Just a Bit…)
Save Goldstream River Rally

Save Goldstream River Rally

October 22, 12:00 pm, front lawn of the B.C. Legislature

Join the Goldstream Protectors for an impactful demonstration in defense of Goldstream Provincial Park. This peaceful gathering stands against a $162 million government proposal to widen the highway through the park – a plan that would remove hundreds of trees, harm salmon spawning grounds, degrade the integrity of the Goldstream ecosystem, and violate the treaty rights of the WSÁNEĆ people to steward their traditional lands and waters.

The proposal, which does nothing to reduce traffic congestion, is currently stalled thanks to community resistance – proof that people power matters. Let’s keep that momentum strong.

Come add your voice and presence to this important call to protect the sacred lands and waters of Goldstream.

You can also make a difference by joining the letter-writing campaign to share your concerns directly with government ministers.
