Accolades and Awards

This provocative movie emerged as an audience favourite in 2016 at the Calgary Underground film festival, where it also won the 'best narrative feature' as well as favourite-feature. It then went on to be voted 'audience-favourite' at at least 8 film-festivals during the next 2 years, a featured choice at the Sundance Festival of 2018, the Empire Award for Best Feature at the UK Empire International Film Awards. It also won 'best narrative feature' at 3 festivals, and the director (Taika Waititi) won multiple times.

My favourite is the winning of the best foreign-language film at the North Texas Film Festival...(it's in English). HA!

Synopsis

A hilario-serious movie, set in the wilds of New Zealand (the cinematography is stunning), about a country farmer-couple with no children that decide to foster a sassy street-wise kid aged 13 that nobody in the city wants. The curmudgeonly male-farmer doesn't much like the loopy Social Worker, and really doesn't like the kid. They don't get along until the boy runs off into the rain-forest, and the man goes to look for him. Things go from bad to much worse when the (certifiably crazy) Social Worker finds them missing, puts the worst-possible interpretation on the situation and starts some wild over-reactions. The fun is in figuring out who or what is normal, and who is actually sensible, helpful, and effective?...when the state-officials clearly aren't.
