Are you curious about other World Religions and how they relate to Christianity?
In this second Sunday of our series of five lay-led Summer EnLightenment series we continue to hear excerpts from the book by bestselling author and Episcopal priest Barbara Brown Taylor: “Holy Envy — Finding God in the Faith of Others”.
As the intro to her book reflects, we will join her as she “tackles the questions, worries, and concerns that arise when we encounter ‘difference’ and ‘others’.” We will engage our own hearts and minds as she explores what is opened and revealed when we accept the invitation to investigate the spiritual riches God can teach us from the faith of others.
As Barbara explores Hinduism — and in particular the Hindu deity Shiva — she invites us to question along with her how often we “assume that we know what we are seeing when we see other people practicing their faith”. If we allow ourselves to be open and curious, how might some dimensions of the Hindu tradition resonate with and even illuminate something of our own Christian tradition? Join us for this time of wondering and worship.
Our hope is that as we wonder about this together, we will find ways to build bridges with other faiths — even as we open ourselves to the diversity and beauty in the midst of this faith community, and indeed within our own spiritual journeys.
Come along to this service, and the next three, as we continue to tap into other faiths — Buddhism, Islam and Judaism — and explore how they can enrich our own faith as we seek to make connections with people who embrace those faiths.
This series will take place on August 3, August 10, August 17, and August 24 during our regular Sunday Worship services at 10:15 am at James Bay United Church.
You can join us in person or watch the livestream of the corresponding service:
