Our Summer EnLightenment series based on Barbara Brown-Taylor’s book, “Holy Envy – Finding God in the Faith of Others” continues as we join her and some of her students on their field trip to the historic Masjid Al-Islam in Atlanta for Friday prayers. This happens hot on the heels of the 9/11 devastation of the World Trade Center Towers in Manhattan, so we can imagine the tension in the air.
And yet, as they settled into the experience, the imam’s words resonated deeply with one of the central hallmarks of the Christian faith, calling for a return to compassion, to peace, to trust in God, to renewed commitment to resist violence. As we open ourselves to glimpsing the world through Muslim eyes, what other points of connection might we find between the Christian and Muslim faith traditions?

Our worship each Sunday is intended to be a collective experience, a communal practice. We might step into whatever is our sanctuary, each one of us as individuals, and yet as we assemble, from wherever we are, we become a people, drawn together through song and prayer, through word and ritual, and through the Spirit who breathes through it all, through us all. One and the same Spirit uniting us breathing us into life!
