Sunday Jazz Matinee at James Bay United Church proudly presents the Great American Songbook Trio!
Featuring the legendary pianist and vocalist Ms. Louise Rose, bassist Joey Smith, and drummer/vocalist Kelby MacNayr, the Great American Songbook Trio is a true tour de force of jazz.
Celebrating the limitless possibilities of melody, harmony, rhythm, and lyric, the trio brings to life classic compositions from the Great American Songbook with heart, soul, and the in-the-moment spontaneity that has earned them an international reputation.
Ms. Rose draws on her extraordinary musical history — including studies with the great Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington, and Todd Duncan (Porgy) — as well as performances alongside Ray Charles, Ray Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, and many more. Through her artistry, she shares the authentic spirit of music-making, personal expression, and human connection that brings this timeless art form to life.
Bassist Joey Smith has toured the world with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Marc Atkinson Trio, the Great American Songbook Trio, and more. A first-call bassist on the West Coast for more than 20 years — as well as an in-demand guitarist, arranger, and educator — Joey Smith is truly at the top of his craft.
Drummer/vocalist Kelby MacNayr has shared the stage with jazz luminaries including Terrell Stafford, John Clayton, Larry Fuller, and many more. Equally at home in elegant trio settings and raucous big bands, MacNayr keeps his focus firmly on the spirit of the music. His own Kelby MacNayr Quintet blends jazz and world music influences into a sound uniquely his own, featuring the legendary lineup of saxophonist Phil Dwyer, trumpeter Dan Lapp, pianist Miles Black, and bassist Tom Wakeling.
