Sunday Jazz Matinee at James Bay United Church presents the Great American Songbook Trio with a very special introductory, swing dance lesson!

Featuring the legendary pianist and vocalist Ms. Louise Rose, bassist Joey Smith, and drummer/vocalist Kelby MacNayr, the Great American Songbook Trio is a true tour de force of jazz.

As Louise announced at last month's concert, she requested that we reserve a special spot for anyone wishing to learn a few of the basics of the joyous art of social swing dancing.

Over the past few months, we have been graced by the presence of our friends Alison and Andrew, two of Victoria's beloved swing dancers and teachers. Although they are both unavailable to teach this week, we're delighted to welcome another wonderful pair of instructors — Cave and Catie from the Swing Dance Association of Victoria — who will give us a few pointers!

Dance lesson begins at 1:30 pm
Live music begins at 2 pm

Everyone is welcome! Beginners are especially welcome. No experience required :-)

Admission by donation (suggested donation: $20). Everyone is welcome, regardless of ability to donate.

The Great American Songbook Trio

Celebrating the limitless possibilities of melody, harmony, rhythm, and text, the trio brings to life some of the classic compositions of the Great American Songbook with heart, soul, and the in-the-moment essence that has earned them an international reputation.

Ms. Louise Rose draws on her incredible musical journey — including studies with the great Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington, and Todd Duncan (Porgy), as well as performances with Ray Charles, Ray Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, and many more — to share the practice of authentic music-making, personal expression, and human communication that brings this art form to life.

Bassist Joey Smith has toured the world with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Marc Atkinson Trio, the Great American Songbook Trio, and many more. A first-call bassist on the West Coast for more than 20 years, and an in-demand guitarist, arranger, and educator, Joey Smith is at the top of his craft.

Drummer/vocalist Kelby MacNayr has shared the stage with jazz luminaries Terrell Stafford, John Clayton, Larry Fuller, and many more. Equally at home in elegant trio settings and raucous big bands, MacNayr focuses on the spirit of the music. His own Kelby MacNayr Quintet features a gorgeous blend of jazz and world music influences, creating a sound truly his own. The group includes the legendary lineup of saxophonist Phil Dwyer, trumpeter Dan Lapp, pianist Miles Black, and bassist Tom Wakeling.
