This week our journey with Barbara Brown-Taylor’s “Holy Envy” has us exploring the common ground we might find between our Christian tradition and Buddhism. There are indeed significant points of connection — both recognize the existence of human suffering, both emphasize compassion, and both seek lasting peace. Yet these two religious traditions hold two distinct views of what it means to be human.
Even in the face of such variance, can we embrace elements of different paths without being untrue to our core faith identity? Might the richness of our own faith be enlarged by daring to see the world through another lens?
Question to consider: This reading runs counter to the central Christian belief in God, however varied our beliefs may be. So today's question is: How do these ideas affect you today?
This week’s focus on Buddhism — a tradition steeped in meditation — invites us to engage that meditative spirit ourselves. During the pre-service music (10:15–10:30), we’ll lean deeply into Taizé-style singing, a Christian form of chant designed to quiet the mind and open the heart. These simple, prayerful songs offer a way to enter more fully into reflection as we prepare for worship.

Our worship each Sunday is intended to be a collective experience, a communal practice. We might step into whatever is our sanctuary, each one of us as individuals, and yet as we assemble, from wherever we are, we become a people, drawn together through song and prayer, through word and ritual, and through the Spirit who breathes through it all, through us all. One and the same Spirit uniting us breathing us into life!
